The Golden State Warriors trounced the Houston Rockets 133-110 on Thursday night, securing their place in the play-in bracket standings. With their fifth consecutive win, the Warriors appear to be playing some of their greatest basketball of the season just as the playoffs approach.
The Rockets had momentarily moved within a game of the Warriors for the Western Conference’s 10th spot in recent weeks, but Golden State entered the day three games ahead, with a prime opportunity to push Houston back four games. After blowing numerous winnable games this season, the Warriors avoided a slow start on Thursday.
The Dubs hit 65% of their field-goal tries in the first quarter and rapidly built a double-digit lead. While the Warriors had an offensive rhythm that seemed to constantly generate open looks against Houston’s defense, the Rockets’ inexperienced squad struggled on the opposite end to replicate that success.
Klay Thompson was especially good for the Warriors. He went 8-for-11 from the field in the first half and finished with a game-high 29 points on 11-for-15 shooting (7-for-11 from three), three rebounds, and four assists.
Thompson wasn’t the only Splash Brother enjoying a productive night. Steph Curry may not have been as successful from deep, but he still went 9-for-14 from the field for 29 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. He even obtained a favorable whistle, allowing him to attempt nine free throws.
With the Warriors’ outside game on point, Trayce Jackson-Davis had a field day inside the paint. The rookie shot 8-for-10 from the field, totaling 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.
The Warriors led 65-50 at halftime, and their margin never dropped below 13 in the final two quarters. Instead of needing to play his starters until the final whistle, Warriors coach Steve Kerr was able to ensure that only one player saw more than 30 minutes of action (Curry).
The Warriors are now 42-34 on the season and will finish above.500 for the 11th time in the last 12 years. Their Texas road trip continues tomorrow, when they face the Dallas Mavericks.
