Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, and Domantas Sabonis create history as the first trio to post 20 or more triple-doubles in a season

Luka Doncic, the Dallas Mavericks’ standout guard, achieved his 20th triple-double of the season during Tuesday’s 104-100 road loss to the Golden State Warriors. In doing so, he became a member of a historic triumvirate.

Despite Dallas’ NBA-best seven-game winning streak being halted, Doncic produced another amazing stat line. The five-time All-Star had 30 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists, and five 3-pointers while shooting 50.0%.

Doncic’s 20th triple-double marked the first time he had reached the milestone in six seasons. His previous career best was 17 during the 2019-20 season.

This season, the 25-year-old has the third most triple-doubles in the NBA. He is behind Sacramento Kings standout big man Domantas Sabonis (26) and Denver Nuggets superstar center Nikola Jokic (23).Image

According to NBA History on X/Twitter, Doncic, Sabonis, and Jokic are the first three players to record 20 or more triple-doubles in a single season.

Jokic, on the other hand, is still six triple-doubles short of his career high of 29 from last season.

With the season winding down, none of the three have enough time to challenge former Oklahoma City Thunder superstar point guard Russell Westbrook’s single-season triple-double record. The nine-time All-Star has 42 triple-doubles in 2016-17.

Nonetheless, the trio’s record reflects the modern NBA’s constantly growing skill level.

Luka Doncic may have recorded his 20th and 15th 30-point triple-doubles of the season on Tuesday. However, Warriors coach Steve Kerr was pleased with his team’s defense of the Mavericks superstar.

During his postgame interview, Kerr praised forward Andrew Wiggins’ defensive performance against Doncic. According to the seasoned coach, Golden State’s defense was critical to its triumph.

“It was our defense that got us the win,” Kerr remarked. “Keeping those guys under 100 points is challenging. I think [Wiggins] was fantastic. He put forth a lot of effort simply to make Luka work. Luka was terrific, as he always is, but his effort set the tone.”Image

Doncic technically had a below-average scoring night, but he is averaging a league-best 33.9 points per game in 66 games. Meanwhile, he only scored 30 points on Tuesday.Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic and Domantas Sabonis make history as first-ever trio to record 20+ triple-doubles in a season

He is second in the NBA in 30-plus-point games (48), trailing only OKC Thunder standout Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (50). So 30-point performances are nothing unusual for him.

Nonetheless, Doncic’s ability to load the stat sheet weekly, even against top-tier defenses, demonstrates his offensive domination.
