Nikola Jokic, the Denver Nuggets’ stat-sheet-stuffing center, is once again dominating the MVP race, but does Luka Doncic deserve the top spot? Chris Broussard, analyst and co-host of Fox Sports’ First Things First, believes this should be the case.
Broussard gave various reasons why he feels this. He discussed who has the best supporting cast, as well as traditional numbers (points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks) against advanced or analytical stats.
He then mentioned that, historically, the best and most dominant player in the league has not necessarily won the MVP award.
“I think unfortunately, we look back and say [Shaquille O’Neal] got one,” Broussard told ESPN. “It’s an embarrassment for the voters. How does Shaq only get one? How come Kobe only has one?He also stated that if Jokic continues to dominate like he has in recent seasons, the case for him winning MVP would remain strong. However, he also stated that this was unfair to former superstars.
“That’s not fair to [Michael] Jordan, it’s not fair to LeBron [James] because they didn’t get it.”
Broussard was cut short before he could finish his idea, but one can only presume he meant that neither Michael Jordan nor LeBron James won the MVP award every year while they were at the height of their careers. As a result, it is unjust for Jokic to receive it.
His argument for why Luka Doncic should win the MVP award appears to be that, while Jokic is having a legendary stretch of seasons, Doncic is playing better in the 2023-24 season, and the individual traditional stats prove it, even though the analytical stats place Jokic ahead of him.
Aside from the triple-doubles and his team’s success, the Joker’s advanced numbers are out of this world. He is once again the league leader in areas such as player efficiency rating (31.1), offensive win shares (11.4), and offensive and defensive +/- (9.2, 4.4).
However, Luka Doncic leads the league in points per game, with 33.9 to Jokic’s 26.6. Doncic is also on pace to average a triple-double, with 9.8 assists and 9.2 rebounds. In addition, he ranks second in terms of assists.
Chris Broussard lists his top five MVP possibilities this season, with Luka Doncic on top
While Chris Broussard believes Luka Doncic is more deserving of the MVP title this year, he included Nikola Jokic in his top five. He ranked the Nuggets center at number two.
The next three names on the list are Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who leads the Oklahoma City Thunder and is fighting the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves for the West’s top slot.
The fourth player is Boston Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum, who is a key proponent of his club achieving the greatest record not only in the East but in the whole NBA. They are now the only team with 60 victories this season.
Last but not least, Broussard has the Greek freak Giannis Antetokounmpo, who has been the driving force for the Milwaukee Bucks during a tumultuous season.
