This summer, the United States will send an incredibly talented group of athletes to the 2024 Paris Games.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Joe Vardon, Team USA has reportedly finalized 11 of its 12 roster spots: Golden State’s Steph Curry, the Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James and Anthony Davis, Phoenix’s Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, Boston’s Jayson Tatum and Jrue Holiday, Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid, Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton, Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards, and Miami’s Bam Adebayo.
The United States still has a solid pool of prospective contenders for a 12th player.
Charania and Vardon reported that “Kawhi Leonard is the leading candidate for the USA vacancy, with Paul George, Paolo Banchero, Mikal Bridges, and Jalen Brunson also being considered.” Leonard, a favorite to join Durant and James on their teams, is dealing with a knee ailment, and his status for the start of the playoffs with the Los Angeles Clippers is unknown.
Currently, the depth chart could look like this:
PG: Curry, Holiday, Haliburton.
SG: Booker / Edwards
SF: Durant/Tatum
PF: James/AD
C: Embiid/Adebayo
That is an incredible bunch of talent, but players like Holiday and Adebayo—who have well-rounded skill sets and aren’t reliant on scoring to be effective—will provide balance.
The United States will have Curry and Embiid for the first time, both exciting additions to the squad, while veterans like James and Durant will provide expertise to a team that has won four gold medals in a row.
The United States may be rich in talent, but the rest of the world is catching up. Team Canada might include Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jamal Murray, RJ Barrett, Andrew Wiggins, Dillon Brooks, Lu Dort, Kelly Olynyk, Cory Joseph, and Dwight Powell, among others. Benedict Mathurin and Shaedon Sharpe are also possible additions to that roster.
France should have the typical suspects in Rudy Gobert, Evan Fournier, and Nic Batum, while Victor Wembanyama would give the country a significant boost. Nikola Jokić will lead Team Serbia.
There will be many talented teams, but no country has the top-to-bottom star power of Team USA. Players like Tatum or Edwards would be the greatest in most countries, and they could potentially come off the bench for the US.
The Americans have not been flawless in the Olympics, failing to win gold in 1972 (silver), 1988, and 2004 (both bronze). However, the team has won gold medals in 16 of the 19 Olympics it has competed in.
These are the expectations. The roster more than warrants them.
