Jamal Murray labored mightily for more than three quarters against the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night. Despite his problems, he managed to make a game-winning, buzzer-beating shot against LeBron James and the Lakers, securing a 2-0 lead.
After the game, Murray was questioned by Inside the NBA, and he provided an extraordinarily open reaction to the courageous shot.
“Man, I just want to give all the credit to my teammates, coaches,” he remarked. “When I was struggling, I told my teammates that I was going to look for them. Every one of them encouraged me to keep shooting… They simply told me to be proactive and to keep looking for it, hunting for it.”
As the fourth quarter began, Jamal Murray was shooting 3/16 from the floor and had only 6 points, 5 assists, and 2 rebounds. In 27 minutes, he had a team-worst -14 for the Nuggets. None of this mattered to Murray, who still had the confidence to score the game-winning shot with less than a second remaining.
Jamal Murray shot 6/8 from the field in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 points and leading the club with a +12. Murray’s ability to recover in the manner he did is a true credit to his abilities. Perhaps it’s time for the NBA to officially recognize him as an All-Star, as he clearly deserves.
