Anthony Davis has expressed strong opinions about the NBA’s selection of players for the Defensive Player of the Year award. The three nominees for the accolade are Bam Adebayo, Rudy Gobert, and Victor Wembanyama.
The Los Angeles Lakers star believes that despite being an outstanding guard, he will never be seriously considered for the award. “I’ll never get it. They’re not going to give it to me. The league doesn’t like me. I’m the best defensive player in the league. I can switch from 1 to 5. I can guard pick-and-rolls better than anyone in the league. From a big standpoint, I block shots, I help. I don’t know what else to do. I’ve surpassed it. I just do what I have to do to help the team win and try to compete for a championship. The awards and accolades, I’m over that,” shared Davis.
Anthony Davis is currently averaging 24.7 points this season for the Lakers, but more importantly, he has been effective on the defensive end with 12.6 rebounds, 2.3 blocks, and 1.2 steals per game in 76 career-high performances in a regular season.
LeBron James also understands the impact Davis has on the Lakers’ defense. James stated, “It’s almost like what he does defensively can’t be compensated for, his contributions to our ball club on both ends of the floor.”
Recently, the NBA announced the finalists for each award among the seven individual awards for the outstanding players of the 2023-24 season. The seven individual awards include NBA Most Valuable Player, NBA Defensive Player of the Year, NBA Most Improved Player, NBA Most Valuable Player, NBA Rookie of the Year, NBA Sixth Man of the Year, and NBA Coach of the Year.
