After a tumultuous 2023-24 season, the Los Angeles Lakers’ campaign concluded with a disappointing first-round exit at the hands of the Denver Nuggets.

Recognizing the need for change, the Lakers swiftly made a move by parting ways with head coach Darvin Ham. In the lead-up to the playoffs, Ham’s job security became a widely discussed topic due to his in-game shortcomings and questionable press conferences, prompting the Lakers to make the decision after only two years.

Now, the organization is expected to conduct an extensive search for their next head coach, considering names like Mike Budenholzer, Kenny Atkinson, Tyronn Lue, and JJ Redick as potential candidates. While LeBron James holds a player option for the 2024-25 season, he is anticipated to have significant input into the hiring process.

However, it won’t be solely James’ opinion that influences the decision-making. According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, Anthony Davis will also have a say in the matter:

“LeBron James’ opinion will be taken into consideration, but not just LeBron James. Anthony Davis as well, I’m told,” McMenamin revealed. “The team sees Anthony Davis as the one who has taken the torch from LeBron in the last season-and-a-half. While LeBron contemplates his future with the team, they have another voice and leader in Anthony Davis, whose opinion will carry weight.”

The 2023-24 season demonstrated that Davis had assumed a greater leadership role within the team, alongside James. The Lakers highly value Davis as both a player and partner, evident in their decision to grant him a three-year contract extension. Therefore, involving him in crucial decisions, such as the selection of a head coach, is only natural.

Currently, the Lakers are reportedly leaning towards pursuing a more experienced head coach. However, it remains to be seen which candidates align with their criteria. Regardless of who is chosen, they will face one of the most challenging tasks in the sporting world.

Tyronn Lue, while acknowledging the appeal of the Lakers’ interest, has expressed his focus on remaining with the Los Angeles Clippers if a separation occurs. Although Lue appreciates being wanted by the Lakers, he emphasized his commitment to the Clippers.
