Minneapolis (AP) — Nikola Jokic scored 16 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter, and Aaron Gordon added 27 points on 11-for-12 shooting to lead the Denver Nuggets to a series-tying 115-107 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday night in Game 4 of the Western Conference playoffs.
The Nuggets’ Jamal Murray scored 12 of his 19 points in the third quarter, capitalizing on his buzzer-beating swish from behind half-court, and the Wolves only pulled the margin below double digits for brief intervals of the second half.
Anthony Edwards scored 44 points in another outstanding outing for Minnesota, hitting 16 of 25 from the field. Despite a 42-31 rebounding advantage, the Wolves were defeated at home for the second straight game by the defending NBA champions, who were fired up after losing the first two games of the series on their home court.
The series returns to Denver for Game 5 on Tuesday night.
Mike Conley scored 15 points, Karl-Anthony Towns went 5 for 18 from the field for 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Rudy Gobert came on late to score 11 points and 14 rebounds. Nonetheless, the Wolves trailed at home for the second consecutive game.
Gordon didn’t miss until there was 3:39 remaining. The Nuggets closed the first half with eight points in 20 seconds, highlighted by Murray’s unbelievable heave.
The Wolves’ three days vacation between Games 2 and 3 did them no favors, as they were defeated by 27 points, prompting coach Chris Finch to dub them “fat and lazy” despite all of the adoration for their performance in Denver. They needed to reintroduce their edge immediately away to keep the audience roaring, and Edwards dutifully led the way.
The 2020 first-round lottery selection scored nine points in the first four-plus minutes before Murray ever touched the ball, with Gordon and Jokic splitting point guard responsibilities to relieve Murray’s sore left calf muscle.
After a quiet Game 3, Edwards was on a mission to will the Wolves to victory, as the Nuggets had anticipated. Their pressure in the lane wasn’t enough, as he struck from all over the court, but the rest of the Wolves regularly failed to punish the Nuggets for leaving them vulnerable.
They overlooked tip-ins at the rim, not just corner 3s. Towns missed his first seven shots, and while his effort and defense were strong, he struggled to get the ball to the basket and rarely drew the fouls he pleaded for.
The Wolves showcased their league-best defense and remarkable depth in the first two games, but the Nuggets replicated that recipe on the road. When their supplementary scorers and bench guys hit their shots, they are extremely difficult to beat.
Gordon, Justin Holiday (10 points), Christian Braun (11 points), and Reggie Jackson (six points) shot a collective 8 for 11 from three. They sparked a 26-4 run between the first and second quarters, with all but five points coming with four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Gobert on the bench.
