The Denver Nuggets, the defending NBA champions, did not expect it to happen Thursday night. With a chance to defeat the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 6 of their Western Conference Semifinals series, the Nuggets chose a bad time to put on a historically poor performance.
This isn’t hyperbole. Denver lost to the Timberwolves 115-70. This includes a 20-0 run in the first half.
Minnesota opened the fourth quarter by outscoring the Nuggets 26-2, effectively putting the game away. This includes another tremendous run. This time, the Timberwolves scored 24 unanswered.
Guard Jamal Murray went 4-for-18 from the field and scored 10 points. Nikola Jokic, the reigning NBA MVP, had more turnovers (3) than assists (2). Denver was outscored by 25 in his 36 minutes of play. That is Jokic’s poorest plus-minus since the 2021-22 season.
Before things got out of hand in the fourth quarter, Denver’s bench had scored two points on one of 14 shots.
What might go wrong for the Nuggets? Thursday night did not go well. The Timberwolves ultimately suffered a stunning 45-point loss. It is the second-largest defeat in a close-out game in NBA Playoff history. Talk about laying an entire egg.
NBA world responds to humbling effort from the Denver Nuggets.
Most expected Denver to send Minnesota packing as it prepares for the Western Conference Finals against either the Dallas Mavericks or the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Obviously, that did not happen. The Nuggets suffered their worst postseason loss in team history. Clearly, people had reactions to this humiliating display.
