Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets were unable to finish out the Minnesota Timberwolves on the road Thursday night, losing 115-70 to Anthony Edwards and Co. The series will now be decided in Game 7 at Denver.
Anyone who believes they know how Game 7 will go is lying. The Timberwolves crushed Denver, winning the first two games. Jokic and the defending champions rallied by winning three straight, taking a 3-2 series lead. Then, in Game 6, Minnesota ultimately won the series at home, and Denver’s effort was by far the worst in recent playoff history.
It’s unusual for a team like the Nuggets to lose by 45 points in the playoffs. It simply does not happen to players like Jokic. However, he is not solely to blame. The NBA MVP had 22 points, nine rebounds, and two assists in a losing effort. Meanwhile, his Nuggets teammates have failed him down. Jokic’s only other teammates to reach double digits were Aaron Gordon (12 points, eight rebounds, and four assists) and Jamal Murray (10 points, five assists, and two rebounds).
Following the Nuggets’ Game 6 loss, Jokic criticized his teammates for their lack of intensity. His frank warning to Murray and the rest of Denver’s team is around poor execution.
“They beat our a**,” Jokic explained. “They outperformed us in all aspects of the game. We need to accept it. Take it and try to do better next time. It’s rare to lose by 45 points. Just accept it, you understand. I’m okay with it.”
Nikola Jokic has always demonstrated the ability to recover from losses like this. He will be ready to play when the Nuggets attempt to advance to the Western Conference Finals in Game 7 on Sunday.
