The Dallas Mavericks took a 1-0 lead after a thrilling Game 1 with Luka Dončić scoring 33 points and Kyrie Irving scoring 30.
The Mavericks won 108-105 on Wednesday to take home court advantage in the Western Conference finals, riding their customary offensive motors in a game marked by 14 lead changes in front of a loud Target Center crowd.
Game two is planned for Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
Dončić was 12-of-25 from the field with eight assists, six rebounds, and three steals, while Irving was also 12-of-23 with four assists. Dončić had a slow game until the fourth quarter, when he caught fire and scored 15 points.
The effort took advantage of Anthony Edwards’ relatively off day, as he grimaced and strained his way to 19 points on 6-of-16 shooting while also contributing 11 rebounds and assists. The bigger issue was Karl-Anthony Towns’ 6-of-20 shooting for 16 points, with few other Timberwolves stepping out besides Jaden McDaniels (24).

Timberwolves vs. Mavericks: Anthony Edwards, Luka Dončić, and How to Win the West
The game favored Minnesota for the majority of the first three quarters, but Dallas rallied in the fourth with a 13-0 run to grab an eight-point lead. That quickly evaporated thanks to a 12-1 Timberwolves surge, accentuated by a Towns 3-pointer from distance.
One of the most important calls occurred after the Mavericks regained the lead. Towns capitalized on a missed 3-pointer with what appeared to be a game-tying putback. The refs, however, waved off the basket, citing offensive goaltending. The ruling was reviewed and promptly confirmed, but the replay made several fans doubtful.
With a minute left and the Mavericks still leading 104-102, Dončić added another basket to extend the lead. Minnesota did not have a chance to tie the game the rest of the way.
