Cameron Mofid, 22, arrived home to Miami two weeks ago after backpacking in West Africa, with big dreams and a small fundraising goal.
He created a GoFundMe account in the hopes that enough of his family and friends would contribute $1,000 to his broader goal of gathering enough money to build a school in a Lagos slum and an orphanage in Ghana.
Within a week, 170 contributors had responded, forcing Mofid to increase his goal to $5,000. Then, on Sunday, Mofid woke up, went to the GoFundMe page, and discovered a $45,000 donation from “Kyrie.”

“I actually thought it was a mistake or a scam, like spam mail,” Mofid explained to The Dallas Morning News on Monday. Mofid looked into it and discovered that, indeed, Mavericks star Kyrie Irving has recently donated to GoFundMe campaigns that have touched him in some way.
The Mavericks acknowledged on Monday that Irving had donated to Mofid’s cause. As of Monday evening, the GoFundMe campaign had raised $65,000. When Mofid received word back in Nigeria, kids and teachers developed thank-you videos and photographs, as well as a handcrafted sign identifying the “Kyrie Irving Classroom” for the still-unfinished school.

“It’s really amazing,” Mofid added. “I haven’t slept much because we’re working out all of our new ideas. Initially, we had just earned enough money to buy bags and property for the new orphanage.

“His generosity alone will fund the entire orphanage in Ghana. It will buy a water tank for Nigerian children. They reside in a community that has limited access to clean drinking water. So we’ll be able to buy a water tank and shoes for all of the kids. There are also books.
“And we will build a new basketball court in [Irving’s] honor.”

Mofid, a San Diego native, just graduated from the University of Miami. He is on a journey to become one of the youngest people in history to visit every country on Earth. He has visited 119 countries and has 76 more to go. His recent trip to West Africa undoubtedly spurred his sympathies and imagination.
And now, a well-known basketball star whom Mofid has never met has accelerated their plans. Mofid stated that he wrote a thank you note to the email address from which Irving’s donation was sent, but he is doubtful whether Irving will get it.
“I’d just like to figure out a way to thank him,” Mofid replied. “Just so he understands what an impact he’s made.”

On February 6, the Mavericks acquired Irving from Brooklyn in a blockbuster transaction. During All-Star weekend in Salt Lake City, Irving discussed his humanitarian activities.
“The philanthropic things I’m most excited about is continuing my GoFundMe of just dropping in onto people’s pages and just helping out humanity as best I can,” he stated. “The goal of my life on Earth is greater than myself, so I must seek things that may not be of interest to others.
“I really love being there because people have been there for me. I grew up in a large family and village that supported me every step of the way, from all walks of life, and if I had questions, they were there to answer them, and they showed me how to truly selflessly serve a community.
“You do this every day. Small acts of kindness go a long way, so if you can move an inch and then keep working toward your objective, picture how you’ll look a year from now after putting an inch in every day.”
