When Kyrie Irving collided with fans during the NBA Finals, he was reportedly enraged because of a ‘inappropriate’ remark made about him.
Irving dove for a lost ball and landed on the announcer’s table in the second quarter of Monday’s Game 5 in Boston, as his Mavericks held on despite trailing 3-1 to the Celtics.
After the point guard stood up after successfully keeping the ball in bounds, broadcaster Mike Breen highlighted that Irving received an angry remark from a fan while diving into the Boston throng.
‘Irving was upset,’ Breen said. ‘Somebody said something to him, inappropriate while the guy’s down on the floor, which was a disgrace.’
The remarks and the person who delivered them were not disclosed after the incident.
Celtics supporters have been critical to Irving throughout the series, citing his tumultuous past with the franchise. Following the collision with Breen and his teammates, the TD Garden fans chanted ‘Kyrie sucks’ on the floor.
Irving, who played with the Celtics from 2017 to 2019, has had a strained connection with the team’s fan base since his dramatic exit to Brooklyn, which ended a disastrous season with the Celtics.
The unfriendly greeting continued when Irving, now a Maverick, returned to Beantown for the season finale in his old haunts.
Irving’s stay in Boston followed his tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he won a championship in 2016.
However, most of the hype resulted in disappointment, and Irving would join Kevin Durant and James Harden in the failed Brooklyn Nets experiment from 2019 to 2023.
Irving’s subsequent visits to Massachusetts have all been unpleasant. The former Duke star famously flipped fans off behind his helmet. In another instance, a fan was ejected from the arena after allegedly throwing a water bottle at Irving.
Celtics fans went so far as to tape Irving’s face to a blowup doll before Game 1 and wear t-shirts with a clown nose.
Nonetheless, Irving and the Mavericks lost the series in five games, allowing the Celtics to win their 18th title.
Irving led the Mavericks with 15 points and nine assists in their loss. After losing his first finals trip with the Cavaliers since 2017, Irving resorted to social media to show his appreciation.
‘Tribe, stay together no matter what,’ Irving wrote on X. ‘Through the ups and downs, wins and losses, success and failure. Keep your head up high. This mission is bigger than us. I love you all!’
