The Philadelphia 76ers’ moment to be proactive is approaching. Teams can start negotiating with rival free agents at 6 p.m. ET on June 30.
The Sixers have only three players under contract: Joel Embiid, Paul Reed, and Ricky Council IV. Tyrese Maxey is a restricted free agent, but he will sign a $205 million contract once the team allocates its available cap space on June 4, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
If things go their way, Maxey’s contract will not be the only one the Sixers offer in free agency.
“Both the 76ers and Magic, sources said, are prepared to lavish [Paul] George with four-year maximum contracts,” Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer said on June 30.
The 76ers may offer George a four-year contract costing up to $212 million. According to Fischer, the Utah Jazz remain a potential dark horse contender for George. However, the Sixers have previously been identified as one of the teams the nine-time All-Star plans to meet with this offseason.

“Sources say Philadelphia is the frontrunner to sign the 6-foot-8, 220-pounder. However, the Orlando Magic, another prospective destination, freed up some salary space for him. “And you have to wonder if he’ll stay in Los Angeles if the Clippers cave to his demands for a fourth year,” Pompey wrote on June 29.
“The nine-time All-Star will meet with the Sixers, Magic, and Clippers shortly after free agency begins at 6 p.m. Sunday.”
Last season, George, 34, averaged 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists.
