So apparently, The Athletic has been polling players over the last few summers to determine who the best U.S. players in camp are. They previously held a World Cup team vote, but because access to this Team USA Monstars Team is limited, they used voters from a pool of Select Team players and coaches. And the findings were as follows: LeBron James is the best basketball player in America.
No chance, right? When I originally saw the headline, I said to myself, damn…we’re going to get another 5 years of King James, aren’t we? Despite being 40 years old, if you are the best player on the court alongside Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Embiid, Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, and Antetokounmpo, it is difficult to consider retiring. Go earn another billion points and put that record out of reach. But when I read that the Select Team was voting, I realized that this was merely a popularity battle among kids who had grown up admiring LeBron for the past two decades. If LeBron was the finest American basketball player, the Lakers would not have finished seventh in the Western Conference and lost 4-1 in the first round.
But here’s how the Select Team and Coaches voted:
5 votes for LeBron James.
Two votes: Steph Curry, Anthony Edwards, and Jrue Holiday.
1 vote: Joel Embiid, Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, and Bam Adebayo.
Jrue Holiday is getting two votes? No KD? BAM, WITH A VOTE? I’d want to see some names next to these ballots to see who is casting these votes.
Cooper Flagg, however, won the Select Team Player of the Camp award by a landslide with 9 votes. And it appeared that one was well merited.
