The four-time defending Olympic gold medalists landed in France on Wednesday to start their final preparations for the Paris Games. Their train from London arrived in the early afternoon, roughly three hours before the squad was scheduled to have an acclimatization practice at the venue where they would play their three group-stage games.
The United States begins its Olympic schedule against Serbia on Sunday, followed by games against South Sudan on July 31 and Puerto Rico on August 3. The competition then moves from Lille to Paris for the knockout stage, with quarterfinals on August 6, semifinals on August 8, and medal games on August 10.
“I think we can get a lot better,” US coach Steve Kerr stated. “We’re getting comfortable with our rotations, and I believe the guys are getting to know one other. But we can do many things better.”
The team will begin practicing in Paris on Thursday, followed by the opening ceremony down the River Seine on Friday night, led by U.S. Olympic flag bearer LeBron James and tennis star Coco Gauff.
The Americans went 5-0 in a series of pre-Olympic exhibitions, defeating Canada in Las Vegas, Australia, and Serbia in Abu Dhabi, and then rising Olympic newcomer South Sudan and World Cup winner Germany in London. However, the previous two victories were by a combined margin of five points, which was not what many expected given that the Americans were 43.5-point favorites over South Sudan and 15.5-point favorites against Germany.
