USA basketball supporters mourn Jayson Tatum, the star of the Celtics, for missing a three-point shot during the opening game of the Olympics in Paris

After missing an open three in Team USA’s 2024 Summer Olympics play against South Sudan, fans set Jayson Tatum on fire.

The reigning NBA champion was selected to start on Wednesday after sitting out the Americans’ opening victory over Serbia. In an exhibition game earlier in July, Tatum faced up against a South Sudanese team that had almost defeated LeBron James, Steph Curry, Anthony Davis, and Devin Booker.

Bam Adebayo led with 18 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks as the US won 103-86

But James found Tatum free for an easy three early in the game, and the star player for the Celtics missed horribly, hitting the side of the backboard. Fans then criticised him for the error in the comment section.

Tatum played 17 minutes and finished with four points, shooting two-for-four from the field

One user said, “Building a house overseas with all those bricks.”

Another said, “Derrick White is carrying that bum again.”

“People will no longer question why he didn’t play in the first game,” a third person remarked.

The jeers follow Boston’s June NBA Finals victory against the Dallas Mavericks. Tatum was made fun of for his embarrassing attempts to stage a legendary moment to celebrate his team’s victory after winning his first NBA championship.

However, the Americans easily defeated them 103-86 to earn a 2-0 record in group play and a trip to the quarterfinals.

Tatum finished with four points in just over 17 minutes on two of his four field goal attempts. In addition, he grabbed two assists, five rebounds, and one block.

After 20 minutes of play, Bam Adebayo led the US with 18 points, 7 boards, and 2 blocks. With eight of ten field goals, including two of three from beyond the arc, the Miami Heat big man almost had a perfect game from the field.

James, White, Anthony Edwards, and Kevin Durant scored 14, 13, 12, and 10 points apiece.

Nuni Omot of South Sudan, meanwhile, scored the most points in the contest with 24.

On August 3, the Americans’ last group game will face Puerto Rico, guaranteeing them a quarterfinal spot.
